Batman is the world's greatest Detective, and he often works best when trying to solve a seemingly impossible mystery. However, this has not always been the case, and most of this story takes place when Bruce Wayne was travelling the world and learning to become the Dark Knight.

Bruce Wayne, in this story, is young and still having trouble controlling his temper. The murder of his parents is still fresh in his mind, and despite all he has learned, if he does not let go of this anger, he will be consumed by it. Harvey Harris is an ageing detective who has returned to his hometown to solve a series of gruesome murders. One of Bruce's other tutors sends him to learn from Harvey, and the older man reluctantly agrees to Bruce tagging along.

The two discover the town's many dark secrets, some of which tie directly into the central mystery. Others hold a mirror up to Bruce and his anger at both himself and his parents.

The excellent framing device of Batman's annual haunting an unseen figure as his way of ensuring the guilty party doesn't escape justice is the cherry on top cake.
