4. Asteroid M

Doctor Doom Latveria
Marvel Comics

Asteroid M is the name of several orbital space stations created by the former mutant terrorist Magneto. It was first featured in 1964’s X-Men #5 and was created by the legendary team of Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Every iteration has had technology that's kept it hidden from standard detection and in standard orbit. Each Asteroid M is a multi-level structure with medical facilities, living quarters, hanger bays for shuttlecraft, and an extensive observation deck.

Magneto completed his first base just before the completion of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. During a battle with the X-Men, the Scarlet Witch sabotaged a button meant to kill them and it caused the asteroid to crash into San Francisco Bay. This would be important later. The second iteration was a cubic mile in size, though it was destroyed when Warlock collided with it. When Erik traveled to Cambodia to retrieve his technology from the broken pieces, it triggered a three-way fight between the X-Men, the Avengers, and the Soviet Super Soldiers.

M version three was a fancier affair complete with selective power inhibitors. Former Acolyte Fabian Cortez destroyed this one with nuclear missiles. Two other versions followed but neither lasted long. Using pieces of Asteroid M, Shi'ar technology, and Graymalkin, the space station belonging to Cable was all brought together to create Avalon. In X-Men #43, it was destroyed in a battle with Exodus and Holocaust.
