2. Latveria

Doctor Doom Latveria
Marvel Comics

Latveria is the fictitious Eastern European country created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby that first appeared in Fantastic Four Annual #2 in 1964. The land is surrounded by the Carpathian Mountains and is bordered by the equally fictitious Symkaria to the South. It is also bordered by Hungary to the North, Romania/Transylvania to the East, and Serbia to the West. Latveria is ruled over as an absolute monarchy by Victor Von Doom. Despite being technologically advanced and one of the world’s nuclear powers, the people live a poor, almost medieval lifestyle under the iron fist of Doom.

Doomstadt is the capital city of Latveria, and Castle Doom is the home and the seat of power for Doctor Doom. Victor has even killed prime ministers before for claiming that they ruled in his absence.

Deep within Castle Doom, the rogue creates incredible technological marvels, many for the purpose of destroying the Fantastic Four, and others to support his country’s currency, the Latverian Franc, as Doom refused to join the European Union and adopt the Euro.

Because Von Doom is a head of state, it is difficult to charge him with crimes except in the World Court. He has diplomatic immunity and the worst that can be done to him is to be deported back to his native Latveria, where he is the absolute ruler. This has been understandably frustrating for the Marvel heroes, and it makes Latveria the perfect headquarters.
