Yuri Topolov was a visionary physicist who worked for the Soviet government in the 1960s. After spending years working with radiation, his head grew to vast proportions, leaving him bitter and resentful.

When he learned of the existence of the Hulk, Topolov, now calling himself the Gargoyle, kidnapped him so he could bring him to his government to win favour from his superiors. But when he saw the Hulk revert to his alter-ego, Bruce Banner, Gargoyle couldn't help relating to him since he was a man trapped in a monster's body. When Bruce used his scientific expertise to revert Gargoyle to normal, he turned against his government and blew up the Soviet military base. Although he could've fled, Topolov stayed his ground so he could die like a man.

Even though he's only made one appearance, Gargoyle did leave quite an impact. He was the first villain the Jade Giant ever faced and his son became a supervillain for many years called the Gremlin. Gargoyle also appeared as a recurring baddie in The Incredible Hulk TV series in the 1990s, where he was voiced by Mark Hamill.
