10 Most Bizarre Things In Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 8 & 9
3. Zompires
So here's the thing: when Buffy and the Scooby Gang destroyed a mystical seed that connected Earth to all of the other dimensions in order to save the world, they effectively ended all magic. The demons that were already there got to stick around, but newly-sired victims of vampires couldn't be possessed by those from across the interdimensional pond, so they simply became mindless killing machines with bigger appetites and even uglier teeth than before. Hence zompires and the main threat of Buffy Season 9. They're an interesting idea to try out, mixing up the dynamic between slayer and vampire that's existed since Buffy's very first episode, but the dumb, brute nature of these villains makes them much blander and far less interesting than their forebears, who at their most cardboard cut-out could at least throw a quip back at the heroes and and at their sharpest made fascinating, amusing, morally complex villains like Spike and Drusilla. Unfortunately, zompires live up to their namesake in the worst ways possible.
