3. Vance Astro
The original Guardians are a team from the 31st Century who first banded together to fight the Badoon. The group is made up of various species - the majority of whom are shown in one of Vol 2's post-credits scenes - and is led by the human Vance Astro, who doesn't.
Vance is an astronaut from the 20th Century who was put into suspended animation for 1000 years to journey to Alpha Centuri. When he woke up in the future, he joined up with Alpha Centuri native Yondu, Plutonian Martinex (played by Michael Rosebaum in the film) and Jovian Charlie-27 (Ving Rhames) to form the Guardians of the Galaxy.
The man out of time element to his origin story is a deliberate parallel to Captain America's origin, but if that was too subtle for you, the original series also had Vance eventually take up Cap's shield as Major Victory.
After the series was cancelled, Vance Astro appeared again as part of the modern Guardians of the Galaxy. He travelled back in time to join the team and even gave them their name.
Now that we know the original team exist - in another form anyway - it's only fitting that their leader should appear too.
