5. Maxima (DC Comics)
Maxima is a character who has been depicted as both heroic and villainous on different occasions. As the oldest child of the Royal family of the planet Almerac, the fiery-tempered, red-haired warrior came to Earth in search of a suitable mate to sire her heir. This led to flirtations with the likes of Captain Marvel, Captain Atom and Superman - all of whom rejected her. As a result, despite her initial teaming with said characters, she has gone on to resent them - Superman in particular - which has caused them to come to blows. As a native of Almerac - and through years of selective breeding and gene therapy - Maxima possesses a whole host of superhuman abilities that make her a threat to characters of Superman's power level. These include superhuman strength, superhuman speed, superhuman endurance, invulnerability, flight, telekinesis, empathy, telepathy, hypnosis, forcefield generation and, of course, optical force beams that she fires from her eyes, making her suitable for this list. These optical force beams have proven powerful enough to stagger the Man of Steel himself.
