10 Comic Book Characters Who Broke Batman

1. Bane

Did you actually think anyone but Bane would win the top spot? The luchadore-inspired supervillain is best-known for breaking Batman's back in the 1994 story arc, Knightfall.

But Bane has done far more than that. In the same story, Bane deduced the Caped Crusader's identity, a feat almost no other supervillain has achieved.

In the comic, I Am Suicide, Bane had the honour of being the first person to break Batman's back... twice! Luckily, Batman recovered by unbreaking his own back a few months later. (It was the nineties. What else did you expect?)

Despite Bane's reputation, he shouldn't just be remembered as the man who broke Batman's back, but also his spirit.

In the 2019 story, City of Bane, the titular character took over the city of Gotham. Worse still, he allied with an evil version of Bruce Wayne's father, Thomas.

And just when you thought things couldn't get worse, Bane broke the neck of Batman's valet and loyal companion, Alfred Pennyworth. Although it took a long time for Bruce Wayne's spine to recover when Bane shattered it, it's safe to say that Batman will never be the same without his dearest and oldest friend by his side.
