10 Comic Book Characters Who REPLACED Heroes (And Failed)

8. Wolverine Replaced By Daken

US Agent
Marvel

In the Dark Avengers series, members of the Avengers were replaced with villains, while the general public were none the wiser. Obviously, none live up to their new namesakes, but Dark Wolverine is a particularly interesting case of failure since he is the actual Wolverine's son.

Wolverine uses deadly force and has killed many during his career, but he also seeks redemption and has a strong sense of moral integrity. Part of what breaks his fragile friendship with Cyclops in Schism is that Wolverine believes it is morally wrong to use child mutants as soldiers (something Cyclops sees as a necessity).

Daken, like his father, has sharp claws and the power of healing, but he lacks the man's values. He joins the Dark Avengers as a cover to try to kill Romulus (the man who murdered his mother and raised him). This could be a noble fight if Daken cared about his own redemption. As Marjorie Liu, one of the writers says, "To achieve redemption requires an active desire to be redeemed... you need to believe that you've committed an act that requires atonement."

Dark Wolverine trusts no one and uses sex and violence to manipulate people to further his means. He relishes in tearing down the legacy of his father as he tries to position himself to take the place of Romulus.

West loves pop culture, movies, comics and TV-shows just as much as you do. Probably. Since you're reading this. Also, she has a cat. He's pretty awesome.
