In The Challenge of Artemis, Diana's mother sees a vision of Wonder Woman's death. So, Hippolyta creates a rigged contest for a new ambassador. Artemis wins and has no idea she's been set up to die.
Artemis lacks the empathy that defines Wonder Woman and needs a PR firm to help her piss-poor public image. While Artemis does try to be a hero, her arrogance leads to her own downfall. All the jobs she's worked were set up by the PR agency and filled with actors or paid mercenaries. The White Magician has been orchestrating some good TV, so that real evil can continue behind the scenes.
Accepting her failure, Artemis asks Diana to take back the mantle. Then, she dies just as Hippolyta prophesied
