10 Comic Book Deaths You Never Saw Coming
5. Jonathan Kent - Action Comics #870 (2008)
Since the 1950s, Superman has fought a megalomaniacal alien called Brainiac. Tired of the Man of Steel thwarting his plans, Brainiac prepared to blow up the Sun with a missile, which would wipe out all life on Earth.
As Supergirl destroyed the missile and Superman immobilised Brainiac, it looked like the Last Son of Krypton had stopped the evil extra-terrestrial's plans.
But the callous Coluan had one last trick up his sleeve. Just before he lost consciousness, Brainiac launched a drone at the house of Clark Kent's parents. Thankfully, Jonathan Kent saw the drone in time to get himself and his wife, Martha, out of the house before it exploded.
Despite the fact the Kents suffered no injuries, it was all too much for Jonathan. As he and Martha walk away from the rubble, Jonathan suffered a heart attack and died within a matter of minutes. Even though Supes did everything in his power to save the world many times over in this storyline, he was still unable to stop his father from dying. What's worse is that Superman didn't reach his father in time, meaning he never got to say goodbye.
