10 Comic Book Origin Changes Fans Hated

Harley Quinn Origin Heroes in Crisis
DC Comics

Batman's origin is likely the best-known of all the superheroes in the world, simply due to the fact that it's been told and retold so many times, they might as well teach it in elementary school to get it out of the way. He was with his folks when they were murdered, and swore to avenge their deaths.

After he grew up, he became Batman, and the rest, as they say, is history. His origin hasn't changed much, but it has been altered slightly to make room for a more detailed explanation, and it's not one many of the readers liked.

Originally, Ma and Pa Wayne were gunned down during a mugging by a criminal who was later identified as Joe Chill. It was a random event that resulted in a remarkable young man choosing a path few would follow, and it's what made Batman a compelling character.

By Detective Comics #235, everything changed. It wasn't a random hold-up, turned deadly that killed the Waynes; it was a contract killer. Nothing was random about what happened to them, and it was all a plot devised by the previously unknown Lew Moxon, a gangster who wanted revenge against Thomas Wayne for his incarceration a decade previously. Taking the random element out of the equation cheapens Bruce Wayne's growth as a character, and it's no wonder Moxon is barely ever mentioned in depictions of Batman these days.
