10 Comic Book Origin Changes Fans Hated

5. Black Canary

Harley Quinn Origin Heroes in Crisis
DC Comics

Black Canary has a surprisingly convoluted backstory, which is the result of changes to her origin that have been applied numerous times over the years. Initially, she was Dinah Drake, a villain who was secretly a good guy, working in disguise. She fought with the Justice Society of America and established herself as a hero.

She was given a revamped, more simplified origin story when Crisis on Infinite Earths hit the DC Universe, and fans loved the changes. She was broken up into two separate characters, which created a Black Canary legacy. The character continued to evolve, and she became incredibly popular, but when the New 52 came around to shake things up again, her origin got changed in ways the fans simply didn't like.

The new Black Canary was still Dinah Drake, but her upbringing was completely different. She was born to a single mother and was placed into foster care. She managed to get out of the system by working at a dojo for a former SPECOPS agent, and through this, she learned martial arts. She was drafted into a government operations program called Team 7.

The changes effectively wiped away her ties to the Black Canary legacy as well as all the connections to the Golden and Silver Ages she was known for. Simply making her into a government operative weakened the character, and fans hated it.
