Giganta, or Doria Zuel, is just one of those fun, old-school comic book villains. Whereas newer characters have complicated powers and abilities, Giganta is pretty simple. She can get really, really big.

Zuel can grow to several hundred feet, becoming invulnerable and incredibly strong. In her standard form, Zuel is a brilliant scientist, but her intellect proportionately diminishes when she grows. The bigger she gets, the dumber she gets. Luckily, after DC Rebirth, writers have done away with this silly aspect of her character.

Another aspect of Giganta was refreshed with the New 52 comics. Zuel's backstory was changed to make her a more sympathetic character. In the New 52, Zuel is stricken with a fatal blood disease from childhood. Zuel becomes a doctor owing to her desire to help people. In a desperate attempt to cure her affliction, Zuel injects herself with an untested vaccine.

The unintended aftermath is Zuel's newfound ability to increase in size, but her superpowers also cause her intellect to diminish and fills her with rage.

Before the effects of her vaccine, Giganta was a good and decent person. A doctor! Which makes it all the more confusing that she would turn to a life of crime.
