10 Comic Book Villains Who Killed Their Greatest Rival

7. The Green Goblin Kills Spider-Man - Ultimate Spider-Man #160

In the final issue of Ultimate Spider-Man, Norman Osborn finally manages what we never thought would be possible - ending the life of his long-suffering enemy, Peter Parker.

The fight initially appears to be going in Spider-Man's favour, as the web-slinger manages to beat down the hulking monster every time, even crushing him under a huge truck. When the Goblin doesn't get up, it genuinely for a moment appears as though the 'Death of Spider-Man' comic may actually turn out just fine.

Only, the Green Goblin creates one final explosion which hits Peter directly, sending him careening off onto a nearby lawn. Parker is wounded beyond recovery, and so the remainder of the comic contains his tragic goodbye to Aunt May before dying right in front of her eyes.

This is made extra heartbreaking by what he tells his guardian - that he's glad he was part of the fight that killed him, because it meant he could save May, which in his mind makes up for having never saved his Uncle Ben all those years ago.

I like my comics like I like my coffee - in huge, unquestionably unhealthy doses.
