10 Comic Book Villains Whose Origins Are A Mystery

5. Onomatopoeia

The Joker
DC Comics

Created by Kevin Smith and Phil Hester for Green Arrow #12, Onomatopoeia is a serial killer who speaks solely in sound effects. His only power appeared to be his durability. The walking sound effect had survived multiple arrow shots - including one to the heart - a seven-foot drop, and was in close proximity to multiple explosions and fires with no ill effects.

One of Onomatopoeia’s first known victims was Connor Hawke. The rogue tried on two occasions to end the young bowman’s life but was stopped by Green Arrow and Black Canary. He next assisted Joker in escaping Arkham Asylum and paid the Clown to start a gang war with Maxie Zeus, who had been selling a drug based on Joker Venom. Batman and the trench-coated villain fought, and Ono lost, but he stabbed Joker in the heart to get away.

Onomatopoeia next resurfaced as a hero named Baphomet, who spoke normally. After aiding the Dark Knight in the capture of several villains and revealing a fabricated origin story for himself, Batman slowly began to trust Baphomet. Bruce eventually let him in the Batcave, unmasked, and introduced him to his girlfriend, Silver St. Cloud. With Bruce’s back turn, the villain made the sound effect of Batman’s belt landing on the table as he slit Silver’s throat.
