10 Comic Books That Are Definitely Not For Kids
6. The Boys
The Boys asks the question; "What if superheroes were actually awful people?" and explores the sick world they are creating with their abuse of power, both figuratively and literally. This is a world full of familiar parodies of your favourite supes, but with a completely different attitude.
Garth Ennis once said that The Boys would "out-Preacher Preacher", it's safe to say he lived up to that promise. You barely make it past the introduction page of Vol. 1 before you're faced with a polaroid of two dogs going at it, and the first actual page is someone's head being smashed by Butcher's boot.
It only gets worse as you read on. The C word is uttered every few pages, it takes four panels before Agent Rayner is getting shafted on her desk, Hughie is left holding the severed arms of the woman who just told him she loves him - and that's just the first seven pages.
The amount of swearing, graphic violence and sexual content could have made The Boys a complete mess. It's complete overkill, but Ennis pulled it off by tying it all up with an intensely gripping story, making the book one of the best indie titles on the market.
