1. Superman

It's hard to picture a world before Superman. As the first ever superhero, he is such a huge part of the cultural zeitgeist that it feels like he always existed. Imagine the excitement of the children of 1938, when he first debuted, fully formed, flying out of the pages of Action Comics #1...

Oh, except he wouldn't have been flying.

Believe it or not, the original comic book Superman did not have the power to fly. He was just really good at jumping, being able to "leap 1/8 of a mile" and "hurdle a 20 story building". It was the 1941 cartoon that introduced the power of flight and, frankly, it was done out of pure laziness.

The animators of the Superman series were sick of the amount of drawings it took to make the hero look like he was bouncing around from building to building, so they requested to introduce a new superpower. Giving him the ability to simply outstretch his arm and soar up, up, and away greatly reduced the animators' workload, and inadvertently created one of Superman's most iconic traits and a staple of all superpowers.
