Every 90 years, 12 gods are resurrected into the bodies of ordinary people. For 2 years, they're loved, they're hated, they're stars and then they're dead. 'The Wicked + The Divine' as a whole is like a perfect balance between 'insanely awesome comic book premise' and 'analysis of fandom & fame'. Right off the bat, readers are also gonna fall in love with Jamie McKelvie's impeccable artwork. The structure of each panel can only be described as 'painstaking', and the use of colour is just incredible. But the real focus of the series lies in examining the way in which everyday folk idolise those in positions of fame and power, how normal people hold musicians and actors up as though they are literal, living, breathing Gods, and the effect that this has on the individuals being fawned over. It raises the question of what kind of world this would be if that were actual fact, but then it only takes a quick look at the general world of pop music fandom to see that maybe this isn't all that far from reality. 'The Wicked + The Divine' is almost a mirror in that respect.
