10 Comics Heroes Who Broke Their Mentor's Rules

4. Black Widow

Breaking your mentor's rules can, in some circumstances, actually be a really good thing for your superhero career.

This is exactly the case for Black Widow, who not only had to go against everything her assassin trainers in the Red Room taught her, but also break the mind control they had on her in order to become the ass-kicking superhero and secret agent we know today.

Crucially, it's also been good for Natasha's personal character development, as we've seen her greatly transform from the unfeeling villain she was when she first appeared on the inked page. Though she's not exactly a peppy figure nowadays, she is a person who can make her own decisions - and someone capable of restraining her urge to kill for at least three seconds longer than she used to be able to.
