10 Comics Heroes Who Lost Themselves (But Saved The Universe)

3. Supergirl - Crisis On Infinite Earths

Wally West Flash Forward
DC Comics

Crisis on Infinite Earths set the bar for all comic crossovers/crises and its epic tale of destruction and rebirth still resonates with comics fans to this day. The heroes' desperate efforts to save the multiverse from the Anti-Monitor was a Herculean task that required everything from them, and in some cases such as Supergirl's, more.

Following the destruction of various universes, heroes such as Superman, Supergirl and Captain Atom were led by Pariah (a being who only observes the Anti-Monitor's destruction) into the antimatter universe to face off against the cosmic entity in his sanctuary. Unfortunately, the heroes were weakened by the realm's distorted physics, meaning they were more vulnerable than usual.

While facing off against the Anti-Monitor's forces, Superman rushes off to destroy a device that is responsible for merging and destroying the various Earths. However, he is stopped by the Anti-Monitor and only saved by Kara's timely intervention. The Maid of Might pummels Mobius into submission, giving the heroes time to destroy the device, but Kara's battle leaves her mortally wounded.

Her death was not in vain, as it bought the heroes a brief but crucial respite in order to stop the Anti-Monitor from realizing his goal, but it was by no means any less tragic.
