10 Comics Panels Where You Really Didn't Want To Turn The Next Page

8. Jean's Ultimate Sacrifice

The Amazing Spider Man 121 Death Of Gwen Stacey
Marvel Comics

One of the biggest events in Marvel Comics' history was the Dark Phoenix Saga, which saw Jean Grey possessed by the Phoenix Force. As she succumbed to its influence and became something of a terror to the rest of her team (and the whole universe), it became clear to readers that it wasn't going to end well.

The story finally came to an end in The Uncanny X-Men #137, and just as the readers suspected, Jean didn't go home with Scott to live a long and happy life.

No, Jean managed to sacrifice herself in a sort of cosmic form of immolation, which utterly destroyed her body.

It was an emotional scene, and it played out across the last few pages of the issue. After Jean disappears, Cyclops spends the next few panels talking to her as if she were still there. He recounts how the event played out and realized that it was her plan all along.

Finally, he collapses on the floor, calling out her name as her remains are depicted as a scorched and smoldering place to his left. The last panel on the page is one that caused more than a few readers to stop and catch their breath. Jean was dead, Scott was torn apart, and turning that page meant she wasn't coming back.
