10 Comics That Saved Hated Characters

4. The Question - The Question Quarterly

The Question is a completely unusual case, as the issue with The Question was more a case of his creator's politics than the figure himself.

While it's no crime for comics to get political - indeed, this often makes them all the more interesting - there's something to be said for characters being made into a mouthpiece for a writer's personal viewpoints. Doing this limits the actual protagonist, as they're unable to have aspects that would compromise the views they are intended to exemplify.

With this in mind, Steve Ditko's time writing The Question was not ideal for these exact reasons, as his considerable skill as a comics writer was restrained by his insistence on making a hero that totally reflected his own objectivist values.

As such, when Ditko stopped writing for him, The Question naturally changed in a great many ways. Dennis O'Neil and Denys Cowan's run with the character served to really develop the character into a more philosophical figure, and one uncertain about his own vigilante behaviour. It made for a much more three-dimensional figure - as well as one aware of his own motives and drive.
