10 Comics That Took Their Characters To New Heights In 2017
5. Black Panther
Marvel published 2016’s Civil War II story arc in close proximity to that year’s release of Captain America: Civil War, but the quality never reached that of its predecessor and received fairly negative reviews overall.
It would have been easy for the company to play too heavily on Black Panther in the run-up to his self-titled film in early 2018, but in fact quite the opposite has taken place as writer Ta-Nehisi Coates has enhanced T’Challa’s tale every step of the way, rarely settling for lulls issue to issue.
Moreover, Coates has genuinely taken the character to heights not witnessed before, with Marvel Legacy bringing about the revelation that T’Challa has plans for an Intergalactic Empire of Wakanda on Planet Bast, far away from the confines of Earth.
Before that, though, 2017 stayed rooted in Wakanda, and artist Brian Stelfreeze helped bring the technologically advanced nation to life in all its glory—or at least the glory we imagine it would have.
But as good as 2017 was for Coates’ telling of the Black Panther, 2018 has the potential to yield so much more.
