For a now seventy-year-old series, the older comics of Batman still mostly hold up surprisingly well. After all, many of the characters we know and love today were born in this era, and so it makes sense that their origins were good - otherwise, they wouldn't have made it so far.

There are some villains, however, whose disappearance from the DC roster is both a blessing and a curse. The prime example of this exists in Batman #3, affectionately referred to in-comic as 'The Ugliest Man in The World'.

His tragic villain backstory, you ask? Well, he's ugly, so he... wants to do crime. That's how that worked back then, apparently.

Although the end of the comic does have the dynamic duo sympathize with the guy, there is the uncomfortable implication that ugly people have some sort of genuine instinct to do terrible things. (It's maybe not DC's magnum opus.)

There is also the unfortunate mention that the Ugly Man's henchmen were given congenital iodine deficiency syndrome - an actual, real medical condition, that maybe shouldn't be made out to make you evil, given that it's essentially calling people with a disability bad guys.
