10 Controversial Comic Book Retcons Fans Hated
2. The Superior Spider-Man
There are many villains in the Spider-man mythos, each with their own nefarious schemes and 'genius' plans, but none of them had ever come close to defeating Spider-man in the way that Doctor Otto Octavius did. Throughout the Spider-man run of 2013, hints were dropped that Doctor Octopus was planning on taking down Spider-man once and for all, and securing his legacy (brought on by his then impending death).
During the final issue of Dan Slott’s 'The Amazing Spider-Man', it was revealed that Doctor Octopus had transferred himself into Spider-man's consciousness, effectively erasing Peter Parker from his own body. he then went on to assume his identity, and after deliberating on his now prolonged life, he decides to take on the mantle of Spider-man, but with the objective to be better than Peter ever was - superior, if you will.
The issue many had with this event (despite the positive reaction from critics) was the fact that Otto was destroying the Spider-man legacy; throughout the run, he destroyed relationships that Peter had built with the Avenger, Mary Jane, and even Black Cat, as well as taking on a much harsher approach to villains, going as far as using guns and shooting them point blank.
Despite being a compelling narrative, the status-quo soon returned which ultimately led to the revival of Peter Parker.
However, despite some backlash, fans seemed to enjoy a lot of the stories, as it was in fact a refreshing take on Spider-Man, and eventually, the Superior Spider-Man returned in the Clone Conspiracy, and is currently being teased as being a big player in the upcoming 'Spider-Geddon' Event.
