Among the plethora of DC elseworld stories sits Superman: Red Son. The mini-series follows an alternate history after baby Kal-El’s space shuttle lands in 1950s Ukraine. Raised as a communist and privileged political insider, Superman takes the place of Stalin after his death, presiding over the Soviet autocracy.

From America Lex Luthor deploys a series of initiatives to take down Superman. One such involves the help of Russia’s Batman, sporting an appropriately themed costume with a warm hat over his cowl.

Batman captures Wonder Woman – an ally of Superman – and baits the Soviet leader to her rescue. When Superman finds her tied up with her own lasso, Batman drains his powers with red solar light from a surrounding ring of floodlights. He locks Superman up so he can’t do any more harm through his oppressive regime.

Superman convinces Diana to break her lasso so she can free him. In so doing she is stripped of her immortality, ageing decades within days. Unable to accept the punishment Superman would proceed to inflict, Batman detonates a suicide vest before he can be captured.
