If you grew up with the Ninja Turtles you probably take them for granted as just another part of the pop culture landscape. Between the cartoons and the movies its' hard not to think of them on the same level as Spider-Man or Batman.

However, the idea behind the series is and has always been totally bananas. Think about it out of context, they are mutant turtles who are teenagers and also just happen to be ninjas, it sounds idiotic and for good reason.

As the story goes, back in the eighties Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird were trying to make each other laugh and came up with the stupidest thing they could think of. It was supposed to be a one and done comic, but something about the wild silly mashup of tropes turned out to be genius rather than insanity and the rest as they say is history.

This silly idea born of two giggling friends is probably the biggest example of a comic which absolutely should not work but does, because it's popularity endures.

The interesting thing about TMNT is that it takes so many forms that are so radically different and yet always seems to find an audience. Something about this wacky formula works no matter how many ways it gets remixed.
