10 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy Marvel‏ Comics

6. Earth's Biggest Threat Is A Big Purple Man On A Big Chair

A lot of fans were up in arms over the portrayal of Galactus, devourer of worlds, in the second Fantastic Four movie. Which is understandable, because the classic depiction of the character is, well, classic. But, then, you can see why the filmmakers thought that the Ultimate version - a big ol' death cloud - might work better on-screen than a giant purple dude with a giant purple hat wearing giant purple lederhosen flying around space on a giant purple chair. And that look is just as goofy on the page as it would be on the big screen, but it's become such an iconic look - it's designed by Jack Kirby, of course it is - that we comics readers have comic to regard it not with a stifled snort, but with the sort of mortal terror that a cosmic entity who repeatedly tries to literally eat our planet and everyone in it should inspire.
