10 Crazy Facts You Just Have To Accept To Enjoy Sin City
7. Age Is Just A Number
So Frank Miller isn't exactly well known for his progressive or non-gross view of gender roles and relationships, but he does reach new lows in Sin City. That Yellow Bastard, to be fair, begins with a pretty strident and "duh" viewpoint, as police Detective John Hartigan pursues his last case before retirement. Roark Junior, son of one of the most powerful and corrupt officials in Basin City, has a penchant for underage girls. Like, way underage girls. And it's horrific and monstrous, which is why Hartigan takes on the case, his specific mission being to rescue 11-year-old Nancy Callahan from the pederast. Then his corrupt partner messes it all up by covering for Senator Roark and framing Hartigan for kidnapping and raping the kid. So Hartigan stews in chokey for a decade or so, during which times he receives no visitors (his wife divorces him and remarries whilst he's still imprisoned), save for Nancy, who sneaks out against her parents' wishes. Eventually he gets let out, and obviously hot tails it to see how Nancy's doing. And hey, she's all grown up! And now she's a stripper! And she says she loves him! And he loves her too! Let's ignore the age difference, the deeply disturbing history between the pair and the fact that he's the most hated person in Sin City - no easy feat - and instead celebrate this star-crossed love story for the ages. Seriously, don't think about it too hard. You'll just get creeped out.
