10 Criminally Overlooked Characters In Comics
4. Wonder Man
Simon Williams was created by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby, and Don Heck for Avengers #9 and began as an industrialist and competitor to Tony Stark. When his munitions company failed to win key contracts, Williams embezzled money and was jailed. Baron Zemo freed the desperate Williams and empowered him to get back at Stark through the Avengers. Bathing him in ionic energy, Williams gained incredible power but needed a serum to survive. Williams attacked and defeated the Avengers but changed his mind and helped them against Zemo’s Masters of Evil. Wonder Man seemingly perished as a hero.
What had actually happened was that Wonder Man had entered into a kind of metamorphic state where his body transformed into a fully ionic being. In essence, Simon Williams was no longer human but he was alive, well and incredibly powerful, and nigh-invulnerable. He joined the Avengers and served with distinction for many years. Williams also became an actor and a successful stuntman as it was nearly impossible to hurt him in any way.
Simon William's strength level is on the level of Thor and Hercules and he can fly. Unless his energy is dissipated, there is virtually nothing on this planet short of the Hulk that can hurt this man and he was taught how to fight by Captain America himself. How in the world is Wonder Man not the greatest hero in the Marvel Universe?
