10 DC Heroes Who Were Once Criminals

9. Wonder Girl (Cassandra Sandsmark)

Tigress DC Comics
DC Comics

As a single mother, archaeologist Dr. Helena Sandsmark often took her daughter with her to the various dig sites that she had visited all around the world. Unknowingly, though, it was this very quality of her work that acted as an alibi for the thefts that were committed by her daughter, Cassandra Sandsmark- who had often stolen from museums within the countries that her mother had been currently visiting.

At one point, though, Cassandra's career in crime was nearly ended, after being caught in the act by a security guard. Yet, she escapes imprisonment, after a random stranger knocks this guard unconscious. The stranger's name, as it turns out, was Diesel - a man who had immediately recognized that Cassandra was a thief. Rather than turn her in, however, he confesses to her that he was a professional thief himself, and offers to work with her as a partner.

They would then go on to commit more heists together, and even grow closer to each other romantically. Eventually, though, their luck would soon run out during an encounter with a parasitic alien armor. Here, Diesel becomes engulfed by this sentient armor, and in response, Cassandra attempts to save him by convincing it that she would be a far better host than him.

Convinced, the armor then latches on to Cassandra- which would inevitably come back to bite her later on. Despite her saving him, though, Diesel immediately resents Cassandra for interfering- saying that she had taken all of the power for herself. It was at this point then when Cassandra finally realized that Diesel had never really loved her. She then abandons her thieving pursuits not long after this- where she would later find her true calling as the superhero Wonder Girl.
