While it may have created a slightly unwelcome trend of rebooting the DC universe every few years, Crisis on Infinite Earths has gone down as one of the best events the company have ever put out. As the first major reboot, DC had to go big or go home, with the future of the company on the line. So, when they said infinite Earths, they weren't kidding.

Crisis on Infinite Earths shaped the future of DC, but at a high cost. Every single possible version of reality was brought to an end during one of the biggest comic book events of all time. It allowed the company to start fresh and bring all their greatest characters under one shared universe.

In what is referred to as the "Post-Crisis" era, dated characters and concepts received a much-needed refresh. The writers were now able to draw from their own imaginations and influences, something that resonated well with readers, giving DC a sales boost that they desperately needed.

While it's impossible to calculate the total casualties of the events, DC were able to make something great out of the ashes. So, maybe it was worth it?
