10 Deadliest Comic Book Events
5. Dark Phoenix Saga
Many X-Fans consider Chris Claremont's run on the X-Men as the pinnacle of all things mutants and it's hard to deny that. The writer introduced some of the greatest members of the team, including Gambit, Rogue and most importantly, the Phoenix.
Despite the Fox film franchise ruining the story twice in a row, the original Dark Phoenix Saga is still regarded as one of the most important books in comic book history. The story of Jean's corruption at the hands of Mastermind is a great one, but also a deadly one.
As the Phoenix quickly took over, Jean's power grew to incredible levels. She decides to leave Earth (and the X-Men) behind and heads to the other side of the galaxy. However, the trip nearly kills her, as her power is all but used up by the time she reaches her destination.
To gain back her power, she siphons the energy from a star, causing it to go supernova. The resulting explosion destroyed a nearby D'Bari planet, killing billions.
It could have been a much bloodier affair. Lilandra had already initiated the Omega Protocol to wipe out an entire solar system, figuring it was the only way to defeat the Phoenix.
