4. Infinity Gauntlet

Marvel DC
Marvel Comics

Thanos is now one of the most infamous villains, not only in comics but in pop culture in general. The Titan is responsible for countless deaths, but his worst tirade came at the cost of half the universe.

While Thanos wasn't weak by any means, it was only with the power of the Infinity Stones that he could carry out his ultimate plan. Jim Starlin's Infinity Gauntlet series has become one of the biggest comic books in the world, spawning countless spin offs, movies and influencing the Marvel Universe for decades.

While the Russo Brothers did a tremendous job on their MCU adaptation, they couldn't quite capture the true scale of the Infinity Gauntlet story. The source material has Thanos pining after Death, Mephisto attempting to steal the gauntlet for himself and Silver Surfer teaming up with Adam Warlock to bring the Titan down.

What they did manage to address is the importance of Thanos' wording. "Half of all life in the universe". It doesn't specify human lives and it's taken very literally, shown by the birdsong appearing after the life restoring snap in Endgame. When that's taken into account, that amounts to billions of lives that come to an end (albeit temporarily).
