10 Devastating Comic Book Deaths That Came Out Of Nowhere

8. Martian Manhunter - Final Crisis: Requiem (2008)

Spider-Man Death
DC Comics

Because Final Crisis was the last part of the Crisis trilogy, it was no surprise the series kicked off with one of DC's biggest players dying.

In the opening issue, Libra confronts the Secret Society, preparing a plan to take over the world. To showcase his might, Libra brings in founding Justice League member J'onn J'onzz, who he captured earlier. Before J'onn had a chance to comprehend his surroundings, Libra incinerates him.

J'onn does everything in his power to fight back but quickly realises this is a fight he can't win. Accepting his fate, the Martian Manhunter uses his telepathic powers to broadcast a message to his teammates and friends, bidding them farewell. By the time Green Lantern, Superman, and the rest of the Justice League understood what just happened, J'onn is no more.

Even though Batman "died" in the same storyline, J'onzz's demise was a lot more impactful. Because J'onn was the heart of the Justice League, we knew the team wouldn't be the same without him. When you watch such a kind-hearted soul suffer in his final moments, it's hard not to get choked up.
