If the fact that Thanos is a pretty terrifying character hasn't been conveyed by the hype for Infinity War, then surely the fact that he took down Galactus will.
In the original Infinity Gauntlet storyline, the Infinity Gem-wearing alien took care of Galactus in an instant, with the purple-clad world eater having allied himself with Adam Warlock to try and put an end to the being's reign. This doesn't take away from the fact that Galactus has bested Thanos on numerous occasions, but the one time the tyrant did come out on top made for some truly terrifying reading.
It's possible to overhype Thanos as a threat a little too much (the same applies to Galactus), but the stuff he did during the Infinity Saga was truly diabolical. Indeed, if he can take down Galactus - a character heralded by Stan Lee as being the most powerful in the universe - then you have to know he's the real deal.
