10 Disastrous Superhero Redesigns

1. Mullet Superman

One of the things that caused such an outcry against Zack Snyder€™s Man Of Steel film from last year is that the Superman appearing on the screen didn€™t appear to have a whole lot in common with the Superman who had become a cultural icon over the course of decades of comic books, radio shows, TV appearances, serials and other (better) films.

Superman is an alien, sure, but he€™s also an all-American hero, and is supposed to be an example of what humanity can achieve. He€™s a paragon, in the same way the United States see themselves. Part of that involves the red, blue and yellow classic costume - with pants over trousers, thanks; part of it is in the way he makes time not only to fight planet-eating enemies but also get cats down from trees, help old ladies cross the street, and rescue civilians from the destruction; but an underrated aspect is the haircut.

That short crop with the S-shaped spit curl of a fringe is as American as apple pie. Which means that when, in the late eighties/early nineties, he rocked a mullet? Barely recognisable. Superman looked like a member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and an icon was single-handedly destroyed overnight.
