Giant-Size X-Men #1 begins with Professor X sending the titular heroes to the mysterious island of Krakoa to investigate a disturbance. However, the group vanish without a trace as soon as they arrive. Cyclops eventually returns, informing his mentor that the island is sentient and has trapped his comrades. Charles Xavier has no choice but to assemble a new team to save the original line-up. After convincing Colossus, Storm, Wolverine, Nightcrawler, and Thunderbird to join the X-Men, the new squad venture to Krakoa and rescue the students.

But many years later, the gang discovered a horrifying truth - Storm, Colossus, and the others were not the first team Xavier sent to rescue the X-Men. When Xavier's students initially disappeared, he sent an ad-hoc team consisting of teen mutants, one of which was Cyclops' brother, Gabriel. Due to their lack of experience, all members of this teenage team were killed or absorbed by Krakoa. Cyclops was so devastated when he learned his brother was supposedly dead, the professor made him forget Gabriel ever existed.

When all this came to light, the X-Men were horrified to learn how reckless Xavier had been and Cyclops vowed never to forgive him.
