10 Dystopian Futures Of Comic Book Superheroes

5. Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow?

X-Men Days Of Future Past
DC Comics

The bittersweet end of silver age Superman, but still the cheeriest item on this list. And who could have expected that from one of the godfathers of gloom, Alan Moore himself?

With the character about to be rebooted in Crisis On Infinite Earths, it was left to Moore to tell the story of Superman's final battle. Set ten years after the last sighting and presumed death of Superman, the story sees Lois Lane recounting the tale of Superman's final days. Beset by attacks from all of his most notable enemies and the public reveal of his Clark Kent identity, it's little wonder that the Man of Steel ultimately opts for quiet retirement through faked death.

Goodbye Superman, we'll miss you...

Except no. Superman would, of course, return (rebooted in John Byrne's modern reboot), but this send-off is widely regarded as one of the best in comic book history. Who said that there was no such thing as happy endings?
