10 Dystopian Futures Of Comic Book Superheroes

4. Kingdom Come

X-Men Days Of Future Past
dc comics

The original Civil War, but for DC.

In this alternate future, Superman has retired in disgrace, following the violent death of Lois Lane and the murder of the Joker at the hand of an upstart young vigilante. When this new breed of cruel, bloodthirsty superheroes become too much for the old guard to handle, Clark is dragged from his retirement. All out war ensues.

Gorgeously illustrated by Alex Ross, Kingdom Come employs a massive cast of characters old and new, with Ross and co-writer Mark Waid having crafted one of the most cinematic books of all time.

Not everyone will make it out either - the writers don't pull any punches in the final battle. That last big fight between Superman and Captain Marvel (now re-branded as Shazam) will break your heart. Does Superman bleed? In Kingdom Come, everyone does.
