10 Essential Black Panther Comics

5. Black Panther By Jack Kirby

As Black Panther's co-creator, it makes sense that Jack Kirby would've helmed a series of his own on the character. What's most surprising is that it came so late, a whole ten years after T'Challa first burst onto the scene in 1966.

Having fallen out with Marvel in the late sixties, Kirby switched companies and began a long and highly influential stint over at DC Comics. Switching companies again later in the seventies, Kirby decided to pen a Black Panther series of his own, and it's every bit as zany and imaginative as the creator's earlier efforts.

Centred around T'Challa as he deals with a magic, time-travelling artefact that once belonged King Solomon (it's also a frog), Kirby's series was as cosmic as any comic could possibly get. It makes his run a less conventional Black Panther comic, but it's no less entertaining, boasting the same kind of scope that made the writer/artist's prime such an enjoyable one for comic book readers to experience.
