10 Essential X-Men Stories For New Readers

2. Yesterday's X-Men

YesterdaysxmenMarvel ComicsOne of the most important titles to the X-Men following €œAvengers vs. X-Men€ has been Brian Michael Bendis€™ All-New X-Men. In the first story-arc, €œYesterday€™s X-Men,€ Cyclops escapes from prison and forms a new team with Magneto, Emma Frost and Magik, and they begin freeing captured mutants while striking out violently at the humans who have imprisoned them. After Iceman makes a comment that the young Cyclops never would have tolerated this, Beast comes up with a plan to bring the original X-Men (Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Beast, Iceman, Angel) into the present to confront Cyclops with the man he once was and help him realize the error of his ways. Although the plan doesn€™t quite work as expected, the young version of Jean Grey makes the decision that they should remain in the future until they€™ve managed to set things right and then return to their past where they€™ll have Professor X erase their memories of what had happened. Kitty Pryde offers to take the young X-Men under her wing and train them. Of course, this doesn€™t work out quite so well. Because every minute the young X-Men remain in the present, they€™re potentially causing more and more damage to the timestream.
