Back in the 1980s, it wasn't uncommon to see the rivalry between the United States and the Soviet Union play out in comics. After all, most superhero books got off the ground because of World War II, so it's no surprise that the Cold War was just as popular when it came to comics.

Batman's most noteworthy foray into battling the Ruskies for the sake of America came in the story "Ten Nights of the Beast." In the story, KGBeast came to the United States with the mission to kill high-ranking officials behind the Star Wars program President Ronald Reagan championed.

When Bats went up against KGBeast, he was beaten every time, but eventually, Batman was able to get the upper hand. While fighting in the sewers, Batman manoeuvred his foe into a small room. KGBeast taunted his enemy to come in and finish the fight, but Batman didn't bother.

Instead, he sealed the door and ensured he couldn't escape from a subterranean room with no food or water. This story saw Batman cross his line, as there was no way KGBeast was going to survive, and a ton of fans were disgusted by his callous indifference to his enemy's life.

Years later, the story was retconned such that Batman alerted the authorities so they could save KGBeast, but for a long time, the fact that Batman left the Soviet assassin to die was canon.
