7. The Black Pearl - Mark Hamill

Umbrella Academy Gerard Way
Dark Horse

With over three hundred acting credits to his name including Luke Skywalker and the Joker, it feels like Mark Hamill has had one of the most incredible film careers ever. However, there is one thing on his bucket list which he has never accomplished.

For decades, Hamill dreamed about directing his own movie. During the 1990s, he met with several Hollywood studios to green light his screenplay, The Black Pearl.

After it was rejected, Hamill converted it into a five-part comic. Much like The Punisher, The Black Pearl is a vigilante who hunts and kills the criminals that the police are too afraid to go after. Instead of forging a traditional superhero origin saga, Hamill makes the story more grounded in reality. There's no caped supervillains or doomsday weapons. Instead, the plot highlights how the media glamourises sensationalism and mythologises vigilantes for the sake of ratings.

Some sections are a tad over-the-top (There are multiple panels referencing priests spanking nuns) but the parts revolving around reality shows, influential shock jocks, and the obsession with consumerism feels more relevant now then when the story was written. It's such a shame that Hamill never got a chance to share his story on the big screen.
