3. Cold Space - Samuel L. Jackson

Umbrella Academy Gerard Way
Boom

Samuel L. Jackson is one of the busiest people in the acting industry. (He starred in seven films last year.) Despite starring in nearly a dozen Marvel projects over the last decade, the Pulp fiction star still felt like he had more to contribute to the comic world. Teaming up with Eric Calderon, who Jackson had collaborated with before on Afro Ninja, the pair wrote a hard boiled sci-fi western comic series in 2010 called Cold Space.

This saga follows an outlaw called Mulberry, (who bears Jackson's resemblance), who finds himself trapped on a hostile planet ravaged by civil war. Always the opportunist, Mulberry tries to make a profit off the warring factions' conflict.

Mulberry's character is... well... it's just Samuel L. Jackson. Cool attitude, calm demeanour, deliverer of bad-ass one-liners; Mulberry feels like the exact kind of antihero that Jackson would devise for a comic.

Because the scenario is set in a futuristic version of the Wild West, you'd imagine the story would be pretty fantastical. However, this four-parter is pretty straightforward. It's not trying to reinvent the wheel. If you are into snarky dialogue and heavy action, Cold Space is worth a read.
