10 Famous Comics You Won't Believe Were Cancelled
3. The Incredible Hulk
Stan Lee believed the Thing was the most popular character of the Fantastic Four because his monstrous appearance made him a sympathetic character. This theory inspired him to create a solo title about another terrifying but misunderstood brute called The Incredible Hulk.
Even though The Incredible Hulk ran for a whopping 717 issues, Marvel pulled the plug on the original series after a measly six issues.
Hulk was perceived as such a failure, Stan Lee had to fight for the character to be a founding member of The Avengers. Without his own title series, Lee kept interest in the Hulk alive by giving him guest appearances in the Fantastic Four and a recurring role in Tales to Astonish.
After five years, the the emerald-skinned titan had become so popular, Tales to Astonish was rebranded as The Incredible Hulk Vol. 2. This time, Hulk was a much bigger hit and has been ever since.
With the Hulk now considered one of Marvel's most iconic heroes, it's crazy that the rage-fuelled ogre could've been a mere footnote in the company's early years.
