10 Fantastic Four Comics You Must Read Before You Die

9. This Man... This Monster!

FANTASTIC FOUR Alex Ross
Marvel Comics

When Ben Grimm has his powers stolen from him by Ricardo Jones, a man hell-bent on destroying Reed Richards, it would seem that he finally has what he's always wanted - his life back.

Stan Lee and Jack Kirby's 1966 classic is the perfect antidote to the previous entry. Jones' reasoning for transferring Ben's powers to himself is to help him infiltrate the Baxter Building, and while there kill off Mr. Fantastic.

Stretch has managed to create a portal to the Negative Zone and, being the inquisitive soul that he is, he jumps at the chance to explore the place as thoroughly as he can. He does this by attaching a tether to himself, the other end he entrusts to the man who he thinks is his best friend, before stepping through.

All is going well until the rope breaks. This would be the perfect way for Jones to exact his revenge but, seeing how selfless Reed is, he jumps into the hole and saves him.

This leads to the saddest part of the book, as an un-thinged Ben is just about to show Alicia that he is once again normal. But just as he knocks on the door, the imposter Thing dies, returning Grimm to his natural stone state.
