10 Fantastic Four Comics You Must Read Before You Die
5. A Small Loss
John Byrne took a very brave step back in 1984 with this story, dealing as it does with such a sensitive subject matter, and it could've gone horribly wrong but, in his more than capable hands, A Small Loss is a beautiful if tragic tale in the Fantastic Four canon.
With both Sue and their unborn child in danger, due to their unique physiology, it turns out that the only man who may be able to help them is none other than Doctor Octopus.
Though he is initially reluctant to have Doc Ock help him in anyway, it soon becomes apparent that he is Reed's only option, so he heads to the Brooklyn Psychiatric Facility in hopes he can reach the man buried deep beneath the super-villain.
He manages to do just that and Doc agrees to help him, but on the way to the hospital a billboard with Spider-Man's face on sets in motion Ock's arms, and they break out of their storage to attack Richards.
Octavius sorts out the conflict within him to allow them to continue on their mercy mission, but when they arrive at the hospital, they are met by a tearful Johnny Storm who informs them that the baby is gone, though Sue still lives.
Truly heartbreaking.
