In 2000, Mark Millar, Mark Waid and Grant Morrison proposed a new Superman series for DC. What was this idea from the genius creators of Kick-Ass, Kingdom Come and Animal Man? Well...

The series would begin with the dissolution of Superman's marriage after Lois has her mind erased to save her from a brain disease. This would lead into a return to Silver Age style plotlines such as the love triangle between Superman, Lois Lane and Lana Lang and Lex Luthor returning to being a mad scientist. Oh, also, Lex would fund his crimes through his career as a master ice-sculptor and also use his sculptures as a hiding place for all his death rays.

The pitch sounds absolutely mental and DC agreed, blacklisting Millar and Waid from every writing the main Superman book and only barely agreeing to give another shot. The thing is though, beneath the initial craziness of the pitch, is a story about Superman discovering his true godlike potential and struggling to balance that his desire to be human and wonder of the world.

It's a theme that all three writers have come back to in critically acclaimed masterpieces such as Superman: Red Son, Superman: Birthright and All-Star Superman. All three are considered definitive Superman stories and it's sad that we never got to see the vision of all three writers applied to the actual canon Superman.
